         PUENTE BELLO HOT SPRINGS

A Geothermal Treasure in the Heart of the Peruvian Highlands

Among the silent landscapes of southern Peru’s highlands, on the banks of the Titire River, lies a little-known natural wonder: the Puente Bello Hot Springs. This magical spot combines the power of the Earth’s inner fire with the serenity of mountain waters, creating a perfect environment for rest, contemplation, and a deep connection with nature.

Location and Access

Puente Bello is located in the district of San Cristóbal, province of Mariscal Nieto, in the Moquegua region. The hot springs emerge at more than 4,300 meters (14,100 ft) above sea level, surrounded by mountains, grasslands, and an immense blue sky.

Access is via the road connecting Moquegua and Puno, with a detour toward the town of Titire. From there, a short drive —preferably in a 4x4 vehicle— leads to the thermal area. There is no formal administration or entry fee; visits are free, but travelers are encouraged to act responsibly and respect the environment.

How to Get There

From the city of Moquegua, the drive takes about three hours. It is also possible to arrive from Puno (approximately three and a half hours), enjoying high Andean landscapes, herds of llamas and alpacas, and the pure beauty of southern Peru’s valleys.

Site Characteristics

The main attraction of Puente Bello is its natural geyser, which releases hot water directly from the bed of the Titire River. Temperatures can reach up to 70 °C (158 °F) at the source, later mixing with the river’s cold water to form small thermal pools where visitors can bathe and relax.

The site owes its name to the natural rock bridge that crosses the river. Combined with the steam rising between the stones and the thermal emissions, it creates a truly impressive scene.

Flora

The surrounding ecosystem is typical of the Andean highlands, with natural grasses, yaretas, queñuales, and small wildflowers growing among the rocks. The vegetation, though resilient, is fragile and essential for maintaining the ecological balance of this high-altitude environment.

Fauna

In the area, it is possible to spot viscachas, Andean foxes, suris (flightless birds similar to rheas), and numerous species of highland birds. Attentive visitors may hear the sound of the wind blending with the songs of these birds, creating a deeply natural and peaceful experience.
